Global Mixed Xylene Trade Analysis Summary


The period from 2015 to 2024 showed a reordering of mixed xylene trade roles, with Northeast Asia standing out as the leading surplus region in the early 2020s and the Middle East exhibiting large but volatile net export and import positions. The Indian Subcontinent remained the structurally largest deficit region over much of the period but reduced its net import volumes substantially toward the end. North America transitioned from a pronounced deficit to a near-balanced position with a slight surplus. Other regions moved away from earlier surplus or near-balanced profiles into more persistent net import positions by 2024.

 

Intra-regional trade dominated in North America and Western Europe, supported by sizable inter-regional movements. The Middle East and Northeast Asia were also significant exporters to multiple regions, but at lower overall volumes. Most regions engaged in a mix of intra- and inter-regional trade, but the largest single trade flows were typically within the same region or between nearby regions.

 

In 2024, China operated as the primary origin for mixed xylene entering the transit system, while South Korea functioned as the key transit hub redistributing volumes onward. Bangladesh, Lebanon, Uzbekistan and South Africa appeared solely as destinations, receiving material that passed through the transit layer. 

 

Mixed xylene prices over 2015–2024 moved within a broad range from 505 USD per metric ton in 2020 to 1,564 USD per metric ton in 2024, with alternating phases of decline and recovery rather than a continuous trend. The pattern generally involved lower prices around some mid-period years, followed by higher levels into 2021 and 2022, then a combination of easing and renewed firmness in 2023 and 2024 depending on the entry. 

 

Globally, sea transport served as the principal means of moving mixed xylene in 2024, while railway and road were also important in several regions. Air transport played only a minor role where present.

 

The global weighted average transportation cost for mixed xylene during 2020–2024 was 61 USD per metric ton. The average cost was based on weighted average CIF-FOB price differences, which reflects the costs of freight, insurance, port handling, and other ancillary fees associated with bilateral trades between exporting and importing countries. Some data points may have been unavailable or excluded as outliers during the data cleaning process.
