PET Resin Trade Analysis 2014-2023 (Full Report)

This report offers clients a comprehensive analysis of the global and regional trade of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin. PET is a polymer produced through the polymerization of ethylene glycol and terephthalic acid. PET is mainly used in applications of packaging and textile production. The analysis in this report is based exclusively on statistical data and covers the period from 2014 to 2023.

The raw statistical data has been systematically transformed into clear and reliable insights, encompassing the net trade balance, trade flows, transaction prices, means of transportation, and transportation cost analyses. Furthermore, key transit hubs have been identified and highlighted under the trade flow analysis section. Due to the similarity of data across years, trade flow and means of transportation analyses prioritize 2023, which best reflects the current situation. The discussion focuses on 2023, as analyzing a single year provides sufficient insight while avoiding unnecessary complexity. However, the transportation cost analysis may incorporate up to five years of data if a single year does not provide adequate information.

The transformed trade data is provided separately in accompanying MS Excel file.

The global PET trade balance over the past decade was defined by Northeast Asia's dominant net export position and the growing import needs of regions such as North America, South America, Africa, and Europe. While some regions experienced fluctuations in their trade balance, the overall global pattern reflected a steady growth in export volumes from Northeast Asia, offset by rising import needs across other regions.

The 2023 global PET trade flows illustrated strong intra-regional trade in regions like North America, Western Europe, and Central and Eastern Europe, while inter-regional trade connected major exporters like China, India, and Turkey to diverse importing regions across the globe.

PET trade flows in 2023 highlighted the indispensable role of transit hubs in managing global supply chains. Countries like Belgium, South Korea, and Mexico exemplified the strategic advantages of transit hubs, ensuring the smooth movement of PET across regions and maintaining the resilience of the global trade network.

Prices for PET have exhibited significant fluctuations over the past decade. From 2014 to 2023, the overall trend showed a decline from earlier years, reaching low points around 2020, followed by a noticeable rebound in 2021 and 2022 before softening slightly in 2023. The price range across all years spanned from approximately seven hundred thirty nine USD per metric ton to one thousand six hundred eighty two USD per metric ton.

Sea transportation emerged as the dominant mode for PET trade across all regions in 2023. Road and railway transport played supplementary roles in some regions, while air transport and other methods remained minimal.

The global transportation cost analysis for PET during 2019-2023 revealed that the overall weighted average cost was 59 USD per metric ton. The average cost was based on weighted average CIF-FOB price differences from bilateral trades between exporting and importing countries.
